Welcome to Tom's website.
Thomas
(Tom) A. Thomas of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina announced on December
10th that he will seek the NC State House Seat for House District 113.
This is the seat currently held by Representative Trudi Walend, who
recently announced her retirement at the end of this term.
"I
accept the challenge to be the Democratic candidate for the North
Carolina House District 113 seat. I would welcome the opportunity to
use my ability to foster community involvement and the skills developed
during my successful administrative career and various community
endeavors in support of our district." Tom Thomas
There
are many challenges that District 113's three counties (Henderson, Polk, and Transylvania), as well as our state, confront. Among those
Tom identified are the following:
-
Giving our excellent educational systems the support and resources they deserve to continue their history of excellence.
-
Insuring high quality accessible health care that is affordable for individuals and businesses in support of their employees.
-
Addressing
county growth, environmental and infrastructure concerns and issues,
and the effects of these issues on the people of our district.
-
Continuing to build and support quality law enforcement systems for the service and protection of our citizens.
"Visiting
in each of the three counties, I hear the same concerns raised. I
believe people of every political persuasion want a representative who
will actively seek their opinions and speak for them in Raleigh," Tom
commented.
Tom's
broad community service experience has afforded him an opportunity to
be aware of a wide range of community issues. He has served in the following positions:
- Principal (retired in July 2007 after serving 35 years in the Transylvania County School System)
- Ecusta District Scout Coordinator
- EMT and Emergency Management Coordinator for Transylvania County for 2 years
- American Red Cross Chairman for Transylvania County for three years
- Advanced First Aid and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross for over thirty years
- Brevard Rescue Squad member for five years
- Gorges State Park Advisory Board and the State Credit Union Advisory Board
- Board Member of Western North Carolina Tomorrow
- Past member of the State Superintendent's Educational Advisory Group
- President of the North Carolina Association of
Principals and Administrators (served for three years), as well as twenty years as Director of
District I of that organization. During those years, he worked with
the legislative lobbying group for fifteen years working to improve
conditions for teachers and administrators in our state.
Tom
and his wife Brenda both graduated from Western Carolina University and
moved to Transylvania County where they have each been in the
Transylvania County School System for the last 35 years. Tom was
honored as North Carolina State Principal of the Year in 1998-1999.
Their son David grew up in Brevard, graduated from University North
Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, and is now pursuing his doctorate at the
University of Utah. The Thomases are members of the First United
Methodist Church of Brevard.
Tom Thomas looks forward to this campaign for the NC House.
"Together,
we can make a positive difference for District 113. I have the time and
skills to focus on and get answers for our district's needs. I will
listen to the concerns and ideas of the citizens across this district
in Polk, Henderson and Transylvania Counties. With your guidance and
support, I promise to address our district's needs in Raleigh. I can
only see positive results from our working together."
